Christianity and Taxpaying

  • When Jesus was questioned about paying taxes to the Romans, He asked to see a coin, and asked whose image and superscription were on it. "They say unto him, Caesar's.  Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." (Matthew 22:21)
  • Jesus paid a temple tax or tribute along with Peter, even though He was a religious teacher and had absolutely no legal obligation to pay that tax. " And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received the tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?  He saith, Yes,  And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying,  What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do kings of the earth take customs or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?  Peter saith to him, Of strangers.  Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.  Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook ,and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shall find a piece of money:  that take, and give unto them for me and thee." (Matthew 17:24-27)  Notice the miracle, Christians who pay taxes may experience Divine help!
  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem because his parents were going to Joseph's home town to be taxed. (Luke 2:1-6)
  • Jesus was kind to publicans who were hated tax collectors (Zacchaeus and Matthew) (Luke 19:1-3, Matthew 9:9-12).
  • Not paying taxes is not part of the Gospel Commission to go into all the world and preach the gospel. (Mattew 28:18-20)
  • Not paying taxes and the resulting energy drain of defending one's self is a distraction from a Christian's real purpose in life.
  • Christians are supposed to care for their families, and not paying taxes puts the family in dire risk emotionally and financially.
